And in that office he found a friend who thrived on the dirt was loyal
to the end.
Barry's case,however, was something different.
그 법률사무소에서 못된일로 사업이 번창일로에 있는 변호사제롬을 만났고
나중에는 베리에게 충성을 하게 되었지
그런데 ....베리의 이번 사건은 무언가 다른 사건과는 틀리고 기분이 여~엉 찝찝한
상태였다

It was huge, and growing by the moment.
The trial was a month away and loomed like an execution.
It would be his second murder trial.
엄청나게 ..점점 확대가 되어가고 있고, 재판이 한달여 남겨있고 집행의
날이 닥쳐오고 있는것 같은 아주 얺찮은 기분인것이다
이 사건은 베리의 두번째 살인사건의 재판이다

His first had come at the tender age of eighteen when a local prsecutor
attempted to prove, with only one most unreliable witness,
that Barry had cut the fingers off a rival thug and slit his throat.
첫번째 살인은 18살에 상대깡패의 손가락을 잘르고 목을 따버린 사건이였는데
지방검사가 오직 한명의 어설픈 증인의 증언으로 잡아넣으려고 하였었다

Barry's uncle, a well-respected and seasoned mobster, dropped some
money here and there,and young Barry's jury could not agree on a verdict
and thus simply hung itself.
베리의 아주 널리 알려지고 요령을 잘 피우며 잘나가는 깡패거물인 아저씨가
뇌물을 요소,요소에 잘 뿌리고 다녔고..젊은 베리의 배심원들은 판결에 동의를 하지
않는바람에 그냥 간단히 그렇게 끝나버렸다

Barry later served two years in a pleasant federal joint on racketeering
charges.
His uncle could've saved him again,but he was twenty-five at the time
and ready for a brief imprisonment.
It looked good on his resume.
베리는 그후에 공갈협박죄로 2년여간 형을 받고 지냈다
이때도 아저씨가 구제를 할수도 있었으나 베리는 당시 25살이였고 짧은 형은
받을만 하였고 그런정도의 경력은  그의 깡패경력에 득이 되는 일이였다

The family was proud of him.
Jerome Cliffored had handled the plea bargain, and they'd been friends
ever since.
A fresh club soda with lime awaited Barry as he swaggered to the bar
and assumed his position.
가족들은 그러한 경력의 그를 자랑스러워하고
변호사제롬은 이때 이사건의 변호를 위한 협상등을 하였고 그때부터 친구로 지내오고
있었다..상큼하고 시원한 라임소다가 기다리는 빠로 건들거리며 닥아서서 자리에 앉았다

The alcohol could wait a few hours.
He needed steady hands.
He squeezed the lime and watched himself in the mirror.
술을 마시는것은 몇시간 기다릴수도 있겠으나 ..지금 베리는 빌어먹을 변호사제롬(Stedy hands)이
나타나기를 목이 빠지게 기다리는것이다...라임을 손으로 꽉짜면서 거울속의 자신을 쳐다 보았다

He caught a few stares;after all, at this moment he was perhaps the most
famous murder defendant in the country.
Four weeks from trial, and people were looking.
his face was all over the papers.
몇사람이 자기를 쳐다보는것을 알수가 있었다
지금 이시간에 그는 전국에 좌악알려져있는 살인용의자 이니까..
재판날자를 4주 남겨두고..사람들은 주시하고 있고..베리의 얼굴이 모든 신문에
좌악 알려졌으니...

She swallowed hard,caught her breath, thanked heaven he was on
the phone and not in the office standing before her desk cracking his
knuckles, and informed Mr.Muldanno that Mr.Clifford had left
the office around 9 A.M. and had not been heard from since.
그녀는 숨을 죽이고 침을 꼴깍 삼키면서 바짝얼어서...,깡패멀다노가 그녀의 책상앞에서
책상을 주먹으로 쾅쾅쳐가며 서있지를 않고 전화로 떠드는것을 퍽이나 다행으로
생각하면서...아침 9시경에 크리포드(제롬)씨가 나간후 아직 연락이 없다고
멀다노에게 알려주었다

The Blade slammed the phone down and stormed through the hallway,
then caught himself and began the strut as he neared the tables and the
faces.
The restaurant was beginning to fill.
It was almost five.
브레드는 전화기를 쾅내려놓고..복도를 질풍같이 씩씩대며 반쯤가다가..사람들이 쳐다보는것을
의식하고..천천히 거드름을 펴고 폼을 잡고 테이블쪽으로 식당의 여러사람의
얼굴들을 의식하면서 걸었갔다..
거의 오후 5시가 되어가고..사람들이 식당에 차기 시작을 하였다

He just wanted a few drinks and then a nice dinner with his lawyer so they
could talk about his mess.
just drinks and dinner, that's all.
The feds were watching,and listening.
그는 그의 변호사제롬과 그냥 술이나 몇잔하고 좋은 저녁이나 먹으면서
자기의 골치아픈일에 대하여 이야기를 할수있을것이고.... 그것이 전부이다
수사기관에서는(연방정부feds)에서는 계속주시와 도청을 하고 있고..

Jerom was paranoid and just last week told Barry he thought they had wired
his law office.
So they would meet here and have a nice meal without worrying about
eavesdroppers and bugging devices.
They needed to talk.
제롬은 좀 과대망상적으로 생각속에 겁을 먹고 지난주에 베리에게 변호사사무실에
도청장치를 한것같다고 이야기를 하였었다
그래서 여기 식당에서 만나기로 하였고..도청장치나
도청을 하는 녀석들에대하여 걱정을 덜고주고 맛있는 식사를 하면서..
무언가 이야기를 나누어야 할것이다

Jerome Clifford had been defending prominet New Orleans thugs for
fitteen years-gangsters,pushers, politicians-and his record was impressive.
He was cunning and corrupt, completely willing to buy people who
could be bought.
제롬은 뉴오리언스에서 15년간을 정치꾼,마약중개업자,깡패들을 유능하게
변호를 하여 명성을 갖고 있고..그의 경력은 대단한것이였다
그는 부패하고 약싹빠르고..법정에서 유리하게 매수를 할수있는 사람을 매수를 완벽히 하였다

He drank with the judges and slept with their girlfriends.
He bribed the cops and threatened the jurors.
He schmoozed with the politicians and contributed when asked.
그는 판사들과 술을 마시고 그들의 여자친구들과 잠도 자고..
경찰에게 뇌물을 주고..배심원들에게 겁과 공갈을 치고..
정치꾼들과 shmoozed(사전에도 없는 말??아뭏튼 잘 지냈다는것이겠지..)하고
정치꾼들이 협조를 요청하면..기꺼이 도움을 주고..

Jerome knew what made the system tick,
and when a sleazy defendant with money needed help in New Orleans he
invariably found his way to the law offices of W.jerome Clifford, Attorney
and councelor-at-Law.
변호사제롬은 무엇이 세상을  잘 돌아가게 하는 요령을   잘알고 있으므로.....
질나쁜 피의자들이 뉴오리언스에서 찾아야 하는 곳은 바로 제롬의
변호사 사무실인것이다

The swagger stopped in front of the pay phone, which was near
the rest rooms in a narrow hallway in the back of the restaurant.
식당의 데켠에 있는 좁은 복도쪽의 화장실옆에 있는 공중전화앞에
건들거리고 닥아섰다

He stood in front of the phone, and cut his eye in all directions.
To the average person, the sight of Barry the Blade's eyes cutting
and dartig and searching for violence would loosen the bowels.
전화기앞에 서서 사방을 째리고 무언가 쏘아보고 폭력을 쓸일이 없는가를
찾아보는 모양이 보통사람의 눈에는 무지하게 겁나는 일이였다

The eyes were very dark brown, and so close together that if one
could stand to look directly into them for more than two seconds,
one would swear Barry was cross-eyed.
But he wasn't.
눈동자는 진갈색이고 ...눈이 너무 가깝게 붙어서 정면에서 얼핏쳐다보면
베리는 사팔뜨기라고 할만할 정도이지만 그렇지는 않았다

A neat row of black hair ran from temple to temple without the slightest
break for the furrow above the rather long and pointed nose.
Solid brow.Puffy brown skin half-circled eyes from below and said without a doubt that this man enjoyed booze and the fast life.
끝이 뾰족하고 꽤 긴코의 위의 이마위를 (거 참 표현하기가 참 힘드네...아뭏튼)
빈틈없이 머리로 내려오고 진하고 강한 눈섭,밑에서 부터 반쯤 둥그렇게 두툼한
살집을 보면 술타령이나 하면서 방탕한생활을 한다고 댐박에 알것같았다

The shady eyes confessed many hangovers, among other things.
The Blade loved his eyes.
거므스레한 눈가의 색갈은 수많은 숙취에 시달린것을 여실히 보여주고있고
여러가지것중에 브레드는 자신의 눈을 좋아한다

He punched the number of his lawyer's office, and said rapidly without
waiting for a reply,"Yeah, this is Barry! Where's Jerome? He's late.
Supposed to meet here forty minutes ago.
Where is he?Have you seen him?"
The  Blade's voice was not pleasant either.
브레드는 자기의 변호사제롬의 전화번호를 두들기고..대답을 기다리지도 않고
급히 말을 한다"나 베린데..제롬어디갔어? 늦잖아!!40분전에 만나기로
되어있었는데...어디있어?? 제롬을 봤어?"
브레드의 목소리는 여엉 기분이 좋지가 않고 화가 잔뜩 나있다

It had the menacing resonance of a successful New Oreleans street
thug who had broken many arms and would gladly break one more if
you lingered too long in his path or weren't quick enough with your answers.
The voice was rude,arrogant, and intimidating, and the poor secretay on
the other end had heard it many times and she'd seen the eyes
and slick suits and the ponytail.
앞에서 얼쩡거리거나 재빠르게 대답을 않거나 트릿하게 구는 많은 사람의 팔을
부러뜨리고 또 부러뜨릴 사람을 즐겨 찾는 뉴오리언스의 성공한 깡패들의
계속되는 협박과 공갈의 소리인것이다
목소리는 건방지고 ,도발적이고,겁을 주고..불쌍한 저쪽의 변호사제롬의 비서는
이 목소리를 아주 많이 들어왔고..이 목소리의 주인의 기름재비같은 쉬트에
포니테일을 한 눈을 본적도 있다

The shoes were shark, and the vanilla silks ran all the way to the
kneecaps,where they finally stopped and caressed the rather hairly
calves of Barry Muldanno, or Barry the Blade, or simply the Blade.
as he likely to be called.
구두는 코가 뾰죽하고 광이 반짝이고  실크쟈켓은 베리 브레이드 혹은 그냥
브레이드(칼잽이)라고 불리우기를 좋아하는 베리멀다노의 털이 부성부성한 종아리를
감싸며 무릅까지 착 떨어지게 입었다

The dark green suit had a shine to it and appeared at first glance to be
lizard or iguana or some other slimly reptile,
but upon closer look it was not animal at all but polyester.
Double-breasted with buttons all over the front.
진초록쉬트가 광이 나고 첫눈에 도마뱀이나 lizard(파충류의 한종류)같이
날렵하게 빠진 파충류같이 보이나
가까이서 보면 동물이 전혀 아닌 포리에스터이다
버튼들로 가득찬 두겹의 가슴장식이 가슴에 가득하다(아뭏튼 폼나게 옷을 잘 차려입었다는것 이겠지)

It hung handsomly on his wellbuilt frame.
And it rippled nicely as he strutted to the pay phone in the rear of
the restaurant.
잘빠진 몸매가 멋지게 어울리고..식당의 뒤쪽의 공중전화쪽으로 폼을 잡고
걸어가는데.. 옷자락이 멋있게 너풀거린다

The suit was not gaudy,just flashy.
He could pass for a well-dressed drug importer or perhaps a hot Vegas Bookie,
and that was fine because he was the Blade and he expected people
to notice, and when they locked at him they were supposed to see success.
They were supposed to gawk in fear and get out of his way.
옷은 엄청야하고 화려하고
잘차려있은 마약쟁이나 라스베가스의 남창같이 보이기도 하지만,
그는 깡패,브레이드(악명높은 )이고 모든 사람이 겁을 내고..
그들이 브레이드앞에 서면 대단히 성공한 인물 그자체를 보듯이 볼것이고
그들은 공포감에 비실거릴것이고 브레이드의 앞에서 감히 얼쩡대지들을 못하는것
이다

The hair was black and full, colored to hide a bit of gray,slicked down,
laden with gel,pulled back fiercely and gathered into a perfect little ponytail
that arched downward and touched precisely at the top of the dark green
polyester jacket.
머리는 숱이 많고 약간의 흰머리를 가리기 위하여 물을 약간들인
검정이고 젤을 발라서 얍쌉하게 빗어내리고 뒤로 싹 모아서 잡아맨
포니테일(머리를 말총머리같이 잡아맨)이 멋진 곡선을 긋고 녹색포리에스터
쟈켓의 바로 위를 찰랑거린다

Hours were spent on the hair.
The obligatory diamond earring sparkled from the proper left lobe.
A tasteful gold bracelet clung to the left wrist just below the diamond Rolex,
and on his right wrist another tasteful gold chain rattled softly as he strutted.
머리를 다듬는데 몇시간은 족히 걸렸을것이다
왼쪽귀에는 정교하게 다듬은 다이아몬드 귀걸이가 반짝거리고
왼쪽 손목에는 다이아몬드가 박힌 로렉스시계밑으로 멋진 금팔찌가 매달려
있고..오른쪽팔목에는 또다른 금 체인이 걸을 때 마다 아주 부드럽게 찰랑거렸다

마피아똘만이 하나 나오는데 수식어가 무지하게 많이 붙는다...
아뭏튼 영화에 흔히 나오는 쫘악 빠진 마피아를 생각하시면 되겠다

Mark crouched low and held Ricky with him.
Romey spun around and surveyed the trees around the clearing.
He cursed more, and started crying loudly.
마크는 리키를 잡고 낮게 몸을 구부려 숨겼다
변호사로미는 공터부근을 이리저리 살피며 돌며
더더욱 욕설을 크게 지껄이며...크게 울부짓기시작 하였다

Sweat dripped from his hair,
and his black jacket was soaked and glued to him.
He stomped around the rear of the car, sobbing and talking, screaming
at the trees.
땀방울이 머리에서 뚝뚝떨어지고
검정쟈켓은 땀에 젖어 몸에 지저분하게 달러 붙어있고
자동차뒤쪽을 쿵꽝거리며..훌쩍거리며 무어라고 중얼거리고 나무에 대고
소리를 고래고래..질러대고...왔다 갔다 하였다

He stopped suddenly,wrestled his ponderous bulk onto the top of
the trunk, then squirmed and slid backward like a drugged elephant
until he hit the rear window.
변호사로미가 갑자기 서더니 트렁크위에 그의 육중한 몸뚱이를 비뜰어서 올리고,
자동차의 뒷창에 다을때까지 끌려가는 코끼리 같이 몸을 꿈틀대었다

His stumpy legs stretched before him.
One shoe was missing.
He took the gun, neither slowly nor quickly,
almost routinely, and stuck it deep in his mouth.
뭉뚱한 그의 다리를 앞으로 쭈욱피고 한쪽신발은 벗겨지고
총을 들고..빠르지도 느리지도 않게..거의 습관적인 하던일을 하는듯이..
총을 입속 깊이 넣었다

His wild red eyes flashed around, and for a second paused at the
trunk of the tree above the boys.
He opened his lips and bit the barrel with his big,
dirty teeth.
He closed his eyes, and pulled the trigger with his right thumb.
그의 뻘건 눈은 번들거리고...잠깐 위의 나무둥지에 있는 아이들을 쳐다
보았다
그는 입술을 벌리고 더럽고 커다란 잇빨로 총구를 물었다
그는 눈을 감았다...그리고 방아쇠를 오른쪽 엄지손가락으로 당기였다..

벌써 chapter1을 마쳤다
영어공부를 하기 위하여 참으로 비싸고 좋은 교재도 많고 ...
아무튼 환경이 참 좋은 세상이다
그러나 아무리 좋은 교재가 많아도 매일 조금씩이라도 영어라는
분위기에 들어가지 않으면 말짱 헛것이다
아주 짧게라도 하루에 한마디만이라도 습관적으로 할수가 있다면 영어는
여러분의 것이 될수있을것 이다,즐기시면서 생활화시키는것이다...공부가 아니고!!..

Ricky grew still and leaned forward,placing both hands on both wet
knees.
He watched his brother, and shook his head slowly as Mark carefully
picked a cigarette from his shirt pocket while staring at the car.
리키는 조용히 입을 다믈고 손을  축축한 무릅에 대고 앞으로 다가선다
마크가 자동차를 바라보면서 조심스럽게 담배를 셔츠주머니에서 꺼낼때
형을 쳐다보던 리키는 머리를 조용히 다른쪽으로 돌렸다

He lit it, took a long draw, and blew smoke upward to the branches.
It was at this point that Ricky first noticed the swelling.
"What happened to your eye?"
Mark suddenly remembered.
마크는 담배에 불을 부치고..길게 빨아마시고 위의 나무가지쪽으로 품어내었다
리키가 형의 퉁퉁불어오른 것을 알게 된것은 이때 이다
"형 눈이 왜그래?"
마크는 갑자기 생각 났다

He rubbed it gently, then rubbed the knot on his forehead.
"He slapped me a couple of times."
"It looks bad."
"It's okay. You know what I'm gonna do?"
he said without expecting an answer.
마크는 가만히 비벼보고...이마에 난 혹도 만져 보았다
"저 녀석이 몇차례 때렸다"
"되게 아파 보이네"
"괞찮아..너 내가 어떻게 할런지 알아???(gonna는 going to)
마크는 동생이 무어라고 할지 기대하지 않자민 그냥 이야기 한다

"I'm gonna sneak back up there and stick the hose into the exhaust pipe.
I'm gonna plug it in for him, the bastard."
"You're crazier than he is. You are kidding ,right,Mark?"
Mark puffed deliberately.
"가만히 저쪽에 가서 호스를 배기파이프에 꽂을 꺼야..저사람을 위하여
꽂아넣을 꺼다.... 나쁜놈의 짜식"
"형은 저 사람보다 더 미쳤어...농담이지 그렇지 형?"
마크는 신중히 생각을 하며 담배를 빡빡 피워 댄다

Suddenly,the driver's door swung open, and Romey stumbled out
with the pistol.
He mumbled loudly as he faltered to the rear of the car,
and once again found the garden hose lying harmlessly in the grass.
He screamed obscenities at the sky.
갑자기 운전석의 문짝이 확열리고..로미가 총을 들고 넘어질것같이
튀어나왔다.
비척비척 자동차뒤로 가면서 무어라고 시끄럽게 중얼 거린다..
다시 호스가 아무짝에 효력이 없는 풀섶에 놓여있는것을 보았다
하늘에 대고 더러운 욕을 마구 해댄다

Romyey's chin dropped onto his chest, and just as he began
his next snore Mark slapped the pistol onto the floor with his hand
while unlocking the door with his right.
로미의 턱은 가슴에 축 쳐져있고..코를 또 골때 마크는 문의 락을
오른쪽손으로 열면서 (왼손으로)총을 툭쳐서 바닥에 떨구었다.

　
He yanked the handle and rammed his shoulder into the door,
and the last thing he heard as he rolled out was another deep snore
from the lawyer.
마크는 핸들을 잡아채면서 어깨로 문짝을 밀어내었다
문밖으로 굴러 떨어져 나오면서 변호사의 또 다시 깊이 코고는 소리를 들은것이 마지막
이였다

He landed on his knees and grabbed at the weeds as he scratched
and clawed his way from the car.
He raced low through the grass and within seconds made it to the tree
where Ricky watched in muted horror.
마크는 무릅을 땅에 대고 차에서 부터 바닥을 박박 기면서 잡초를 잡아 댕겼다
리키가 겁에 잔뜩 질려서 바라보고 있는 나무까지 총알같이 풀속을
달렸다

He stopped at the stump and turned,expecting to see the lawyer
lumbering after him with the gun.
But the car appeared harmless.
The passenger door was open.
The engine was running.
The exhaust pipe was free of devices.
변호사가 총을 들고 뒤뚱거리며 쫓아올것이라는 생각에 마크는
나무둥지에 멈쳐서 뒤를 돌아보았다.
그러나 자동차를 별로 심상치않아보이고...
조수석자리는 문짝이 열려있고...엔진은 계속 돌고..배기파이프에는
아무것도 꽂혀 있지 않고

He breathed for the first time in a minute, then slowly looked at Ricky.
"I pulled the hose out,"
Ricky said in a shrill voice between rapid breaths.
Mark nodded but said nothing.
He was suddenly much calmer.
마크는 멈추었던 숨을 처음으로 내쉬고..그리고 리키를 쳐다 보았다
"내가 호스를 뽑았어"
리키는 떨리는 목소리를 거친숨 사이로 내었다
마크는 아무말않고 고개를 끄떡거리고..
마크는 갑자기 엄청 마음이 가라 앉았다

The car was fifty feet away, and if Romey emerged, they could disappear
through the woods in an instant.
And hidden by the tree and the cover of the brush,
they would never be seen by Romey if he decided to jump out and start
blasting away with the gun.
자동차는 50피트 저쪽에 있고 로미가 나타나더라도..그들은 총알같이
숲속으로 사라질수가 있을것이고..
나무뒤로 숨어서  풀프러기로 가리면..
로미가 총을 들고 뛰어나와서 쫓아오더라도 ..그들은 걸리지 않을것이다

"I'm scared, Mark.Let's go,"
Ricky said, his voice still shrill, his hands shaking.
"just a minute." Mark studied the car intently.
"Come on , Mark.Let's go."
"I said just a minute."
Ricky watched the car."Is he dead?"
"I don't think so."
"형 가자...겁나"
리키가 손을 떨면서 ..목소리를 떨면서 이야기했다
"가만 있어."마크는 자동차를 유심히 바라보면서 말하였고
"응 형 가자니까"
"잠깐 기다리라고 했잖아!!"
리키가 자동차를 바라보며 "저사람 죽었어?"
"아닐걸"

So the man was alive, and had the gun, and it was becoming obvious
that his big brother was no longer scared and was thinking of something.
Ricky took a step backward.
"I'm leaving," he mumbled.
"I want to go home."
Mark did not move.
He exhaled calmly and studied the car."Just a second,"
He said without looking at Ricky.
The voice had authority again.
변호사는 살아있고..그는 총을 갖고 있고..믿음직한 형은 더이상 겁을
안먹고..무언가 생각을 하고 있다
리키는 뒷거름질을 치며
"난 갈래"리키가 우물거린다
"집에 가고 싶어"
마크는 숨을 조용히 내쉬고 자동차를 살피면서"잠깐 기다려"
리키를 쳐다도 보지않으며 말하고 마크의 목소리에는
다시 힘이 들어가고 동생을 겁을 주는  목소리가 되었다

He was passing out!
Mark stared at him and watched his thick chest move.
He'd seen his ex-father do this a hundred times.
Mark breathed deeply.
변호사는 아주 기절한듯이 가 버렸다!!

(pass away는 죽다라는 뜻이 있습니다
pass out 은 기절하다,혼졸하다,술먹구 필림이 끊겼다는 의미)

마크는 그를 쳐다보면서 두툽한 가슴팍의 움직이는것을 살폈다
마크는 예전의 아버지도 이렇게 (술쳐먹고)뻣어버린것을 수백번을
보았었다
마크는 숨을 깊이 들이 마셨다..

The door lock would make noise.
The gun was too close to Romey's hand.
Mark's stomach cramped and his feet were numb.
The red face emitted a loud, sluggish noise, and Mark knew there
would be no more chance.
Slowly,
ever so slowly, he inched his shaking finger to the door lock switch.
도아락을 열면 아마도 소리가 나겠지..???
총은 로미의 손에 너무 가깝게 있었다
마크의 속은 경련이 일고 다리는 마비가 된듯 감각이 없었다
변호사의 뻘건 얼굴은 시끄럽고 ..불규칙한 소리를 쏟아낸다
마크는 더이상의 기회는 없다는것을 안다
천천히,최대한 천천히..떨리는 손가락을 도아락쪽으로 조금씩 닥아간다

Ricky's eyes were almost as dry as his mouth,
But his jeans were soaked.
He was under the tree,
in the darkness, away from the bushes and the tall grass and the
car.
동생 리키의 눈은 입속과 같이 거의 말라버렸지만 바지는 축축히 젖어 있었다
리키는 잡목과 풀섶그리고 자동차에서 떨어져있는 나무의 그늘밑에
있고

Five minutes had passed since he had removed the hose.
Five minutes since the gunshot.
동생리키가 호스를 빼어버린후 5분 ,총소리가 난지 5분..

But he knew his brother was alive because he had darted behind trees
for fifty feet until he caught a glimpse of the blond head sitting
low and moving about in the huge car.
So he stopped crying, and started praying.
지났으나 리키는 형이 아직 살아있다는것을 안다..
약 50피트를 나무밑까지 달려오면서..갈색머리가 자동차안에서 움직이며
낮게 앉아있는것을 흘낀 보았으니까
그래서 리키는 울음을 그치고...기도를 시작을 하고

통나무있는곳까지 돌아와서 낮게 숙이고 자동차를 쳐다 보면서 형이
나타나기를 애를 태우고 있는것이다
이때 갑자기 옆좌석이 확열리면서 거기에 형마크가 튀어 나왔다...

"The Blade is not the smartest thug I've ever ever met, you know.

"브레드는 내가 본중에 제일 바보같은 깡패녀석이야..
그녀석이 천재일것같지만 ... 정말 병신같은 녀석이지"
아저씨도 바보잖아..마크는  그렇게 생각했다

"The body's under my boat."

배기까스와 연결된 호스를 차안에 넣고 않아서 있으니 바보지..
최대한 가만히 앉아 있었다.
"시체는 내 보트밑에 있지"
"아저씨 보트요?"
"그래 내 보트..그녀석이 되게 급했거든"

나는 그때 시내에 없었고 ..그래서 그 사랑스런 고객 브레이드님께서 시체를 나의 집으로
옮기고 차고의 방금 쳐놓은 콩크리트속에 묻어 버렸지
아직 거기에 있고..믿을수 있냐? FBI가 시체를 찾으려고 뉴오리언스의 거의
반을 파고 다녔지만 나의 집은 도저히 생각을 할수가 없었지
그런것을 보면 아마도 베리녀석은 그렇게 바보가 아닌거 같다"

"When did he tell you this?"
"I'm sick of your questions,kid."
"I'd really like to leave now."
"Shut up. The gas is working. We're gone, kid.Gone."
He dropped the pistol on the seat.
The engine hummed quietly .
"언제 아저씨에게 그것을 이야기했어요?"
"정말 너의 궁금증은 지겹구나..지겨워"
"그러니까 정말 저좀 보내주세요.."
"시끄러워..깨스가 이제 효력을 발휘할거야 .. 우리는 떠나는거야 꼬마야
가는거라구"
변호사는 총을 좌석에 떨구었다.
엔진은 조용히 돌아가고 있고..

Mark glanced at the bullet hole in the window, at th millions of tiny
crooked cracks running from it,
then at red face and heavy eyelids.
A quick snort, almost a snore, and the head nodded downward.
마크 창문에 수백만개의 금이 주변에 좌악 나있는 총구멍을 흘낀 쳐다보다가
변호사의 벌건얼굴과 눈꺼풀이 무겁게 내려않는 것을 흘낀보았다..
코를 고는듯...그리고 머리를 아래로 툭!떨구어 내린다..

Keep him talking.
"Why does this Barry guy want to kill you?"
"Another question. I'm floating. Are you floating?"
"Yeah. It feels good."
"Buncha reasons. Close your eyes, kid. Say your prayers."
계속 변호사에게 말을 시키기 위하여
"왜 베리란 사람이 아저씨를 죽이려고 해요?"
"또 질문이로군....몸이 부웅 뜨는것 같지."
"예 아주 기분이 좋아요"
"이유가 아주많지..(Bunch of reasons를 소리나는대로 써서 buncha reasons)
눈을 감고 기도를 해라"

Mark watched the pistiol and glanced at the door lock.
He slowly touched each fingertip to each thumb, like counting in kindergarten,
and the coordination was perfect.
마크는 총을 쳐다보며 도아락을 흘낀거려 보았다
유치원아이들이 셈을 세듯이 손가락끝을 하나하나 세어봅니다
(coordination was perfect라는것은 아이들이 볼펜을 손등에서 뺑뺑돌리듯이
균형이 맞아돌아가는 그런 음율이 기가막히게 맞는..뭐 그런거..)

"So where's the body?"
Romey snorted and his head nodded.
The voice was almost a whisper.
"The body of Boyd Boyette.
What a question.First U.S.senator murdered in office, did you know that?
Murdered by my dear client Barry the Blade Muldanno, who shot him
in the head four times, then hid the body. No body , no case.
Do you understand,kid?"
"그래서 시체는 어디에 있어요?"
로미는 짜식이 물어보는것도 많다는듯이 고개를 끄덕거리며
목소리는 거의 중얼거리듯이
"보이드보옛의 시체라~~...좋은 질문이지...미국의 상원의원이 사무실에서
살해를 당하여..나의 친애하는 베리브데드멀다노님께서..머리를 네방의 총알로..
그리고 시체를 감추고..아무도..아무 사건도..없는듯이..알겠냐 꼬마야?"

"Not really."
"Why aren't you crying, kid? You were crying a few minutes ago.
Aren't you scared?"
"정말이요?!"
"너 왜 울지 않냐...조금전까지 징징거리더니..겁안나냐??"

"Yes, I'm scared. And I'd like to leave.
I'm sorry you want to die and all, but I have to take care of my mother."

You see, kid, the feds have to have a body to prove there was a murder.
Barry is their suspect, their only suspect, because he really did it,
you see, in fact they know he did it.
But they need the body."
"겁나요..그리고 나좀 놓아주세요
아저씨가 죽고싶은것은 참으로 안되었지만 나는 엄마를 돌보아드려야해요"
"감격적이로군..정말 눈물나는구나!!!..자 그만 떠들어라
연방정부(Feds는 Federals의 줄인말)는 지금 살인사건을 증명하기 위하여 시체가
필요해.
베리는 그들의 용의자야..딱 하나의 용의자지..왜냐하면 깡패 베리가 진짜로 했으니까
실제로 베리가 했다는것을 연방정부에서는 알지만 시체가 필요한거야

"Where is it?"
A dark cloud moved in front of the sun and the clearing was suddenly darker.
Romey moved the gun gently along his leg as if to warn Mark against
any sudden moves.
"시체가 어디에 있어요?"
시커먼 구름이 앞의 태양을 가리고 공터부분이 갑자기 어두어 졌다
로미는 총을 다리쪽에서 천천히 움직이는것이 마치 마크의 돌발적인 행동을
할것 같은것에 대한 주의를 주려는 듯이...
