They sat next to each other on the log under the tree,
smoking quietly and staring at the grassy clearing beyond the shade.
Mark was in fact more mature than Ricky at the age of eight.
He was more mature than any kid at age of eight.
He's always been mature.
나무밑 통나무에 나란히 앉아서 조용히 담배를 피우면서 그늘 저쪽으로

사실 형마크는 같은 여덟살때라도 동생리키보다 숙성하였다
그리고 마크는 여덟살짜리 여는 애들 보다도 훨씬 숙성하였고...
그는 항상 숙성한 어린이였다

He had testified in court about the abuse and neglect and beatings.
He was very mature.
마크가 아홉살이 되었을때 엄마에게 이혼소송을 하도록 설득을 하였다
이혼장을 받고 술이 고주망태가 되어 아빠가 나타났을때 경찰을 부르기도
하였었고....
마크는 법정에서 아빠의 가정에 불충실하고,폭행을 하고 ,못살게 구는 것들에
대하여 증언을 하였었었다
마크는 이렇게 조숙할수밖에 없었던것이다

Ricky heard the car first.
There was a slow,rushing sound coming from the dirt road.
Then Mark heard it, and they stopped smoking.
"Just sit still,"
Mark said softly.They did not move.
